      Newlandia Youth Mural (2026)

      Mural

Artist(s): Keioni Lander from Mulla Mulla Art with assistance from local youth participants

      About the Artist

Keioni Lander is a contemporary First Nations artist, a proud Arrernte, Anmatyerr, Kaytetye and Warlpiri woman and a local small business owner. Her art is inspired by family, Country, and community. This all motivates her to create artworks and projects that reflect the Mparntwe community.

By engaging with youth, individuals and local businesses Keioni uses her art as a form of storytelling that beautifully captures the people, community and Country of Central Australia.

      About the Project

This youth-led mural was facilitated by local artist Keioni Lander (Mulla Mulla Art) through a series of creative workshops delivered as part of the Alice Springs Town Council Winter School Holiday Program 2026. Held at Newland Park, the workshops provided opportunities for young people from Mparntwe to share ideas through art, discussion and brainstorming, which were then developed collaboratively into the final design. Young participants worked alongside the artist to help shape the concept and contribute to the creation of the mural, which was officially unveiled at the inaugural Newlandia – Newland Park Skate & Music Festival.

This initiative supports the Alice Springs Public Art Masterplan 2020–2030 by investing in suburban public art, while also aligning with the Municipal Plan 2025/26 to enhance community livability and celebrate what makes Alice Springs unique.

This project was proudly supported and joint funded by Alice Springs Town Council, NIAA, and Tangentyere Council.

      About the Art

Inspired by the 2026 NAIDOC Week theme, "50 Years of Deadly", and the ideas and values of local youth, the artwork celebrates the community, Country, animals and plants of Mparntwe. Created from the collective vision of the young participants, the mural is intended to bring happiness to the community while fostering a sense of pride among those who contributed to the project.

The finished work is a beautiful representation of Mparntwe's next generation and the young leaders within the community.

Council acknowledges the Central Arrernte people as the Traditional Owners of Mparntwe, the Country where we live and work. We pay our respects to Elders past and present, and celebrate a deep and ongoing connection to this land, its waters, and its stories. We endeavour to listen, learn and grow as we continue our ongoing journey towards reconciliation.
