How does the application process work?
Once you submit an Expression of Interest, the Renew Project team will review your application and consider factors such as your idea, business, creative practice or community project, along with the spaces currently available through the program. They'll then work to match people with spaces that are the best fit for everyone involved.
Not everyone will be placed straight away, and that's okay. Renew is about finding the right opportunity, not just the first available space. The process can also give you extra time to prepare for operating from a shopfront, while receiving guidance and support along the way.
The program particularly looks to support local ideas, locally made products and initiatives that contribute to a vibrant, active Todd Mall. Renew complements, rather than competes with, existing businesses by helping activate vacant spaces, support local traders and create positive stories and activity in the Alice Springs (Mparntwe) CBD. The Renew Project Manager is there to help make things as practical, achievable and sustainable as possible, setting participants up for success
How long can I stay in a Renew space, and when would I start paying rent?
Renew spaces are provided on a rolling licence agreement, which means you can stay until the property is leased or the owner gives 30 days' notice. You can also leave with 30 days' notice. Many participants use their space rent-free for an extended period, although some owners may choose to discuss a longer-term paid arrangement down the track.
The program is designed to turn vacant spaces into opportunities that benefit property owners, participants and the wider community, while helping bring more activity, vibrancy and visitation to Todd Mall.
Will I know the future lease costs before moving into a space?
We'll help you understand the options available before you commit to a space. While Renew spaces are provided rent-free, participants are generally responsible for utilities such as electricity and water, and sometimes other outgoings. If you'd like to stay longer term, we can also support discussions with the owner about a commercial or low-cost lease arrangement.
Renew is intended as a stepping stone, providing pathways for local creatives, entrepreneurs and community organisations to test ideas, build an audience and grow into sustainable long-term opportunities.

The program complements existing businesses by attracting visitation, supporting local economic activity and fostering community renewal through creative and entrepreneurial projects.

Anyone who creates their own wares or intellectual property (STEAM – Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) or not for profit social enterprises.
