The Regional Waste Management Facility (RWMF) accepts a wide variety of waste types to help our community responsibly manage and reduce landfill. From everyday household rubbish and green waste to construction debris, e-waste, scrap metal, tyres, and hazardous materials like paint and batteries – we’re equipped to handle it. Dedicated drop-off zones and recycling areas ensure materials are sorted and processed appropriately, supporting sustainability across Central Australia. Whether you're clearing out your shed, tackling a home renovation, or disposing of business waste, our facility provides a safe, convenient and environmentally responsible solution.
Aluminium Cans
Recycled through Envirobank, with a collection point available at the Transfer Station. No cash refunds are provided, as the facility is not a Cash for Containers depot.
Asbestos
To dispose of asbestos at the RWMF, please call ahead on 8950 4341 and book a time with the team. At least 24 hours notice is required.
Batteries
Used domestic batteries should NOT be placed in kerbside bins. Residents can drop them off at designated collection points within the Rediscovery Centre.
Car batteries are free to dispose of within the designated areas at the Transfer Station.
Cardboard
Cardboard can be separated from general waste and disposed off in designated collection points within the Transfer Station for free. Processed onsite and baled into approximately 500kg cubes. These are transported interstate to recycling facilities where they are repurposed into new products.
Chemical containers
You can dispose of chemical containers up to 20 litres at the Regional Waste Management Facility. To do so, book a time to access Council's Chemical Disposal Centre by contacting the team at 8950 4340.
Any chemical containers larger than 20 litres will not be accepted. All containers larger than this will need to be disposed through a commercial company.
Clean Fill
Clean fill and rocks (less than 10cm in diameter) can be disposed of for free for both residents and commercial operators.
Coffee Pods
Residents can take coffee pods to The Rediscovery Centre and dispose them for free in designed drop off bins which are sent off for recycling through various recycling schemes
Construction and Demolition Waste
Sorting construction and demolition waste results in reduced landfill and fees.
E-Waste
E-waste is accepted onsite and and dismantled, with individual components recycled or reused. This includes televisions, computers, printers, fax machines, and CD players.
Food Waste
The RWMF features a BiobiN system that begins the composting process automatically. Residents can drop off food waste, such as coffee grounds, meat, and citrus products in the designated bin between 8 am and 4 pm daily free of charge.
Green Waste
Green waste from your garden can be dropped off at the RWMF free of charge. Just be sure it's not mixed in with any other household waste. Commercial quantities will incur a fee. There are separate bins for palms and green waste. Grass clipping, weeds and leaf litter are to go into general waste bins.

Pensioner Green Waste Collection
HDPE Plastics
Accepted at the Transfer Station and placed in a designated bin. These materials are processed onsite through a granulator and transported to a facility in Adelaide, where they are manufactured into new products, such as street bollards.
Household Waste
Residents can dispose of everyday rubbish by placing it in their general waste bins for kerbside collection. For larger quantities or items not suitable for kerbside bins, residents can drop off directly at the RWMF.
Mattresses and Furniture
Bulky items like mattresses and furniture can be disposed of at the RWMF with fees incurred.
Metal
All metals can be taken to the RWMF. Please procced to the weighbridge. Fees incurred
Mobile Phones/Tablets
Residents can take mobile phones and tablets to The Rediscovery Centre and dispose them for free in designed drop off bins which are sent off for recycling through various recycling schemes
Paint
Unwanted residential paint and associated packaging is accepted onsite and transported for treatment through the Paintback scheme. Reclaimed products are re-used and repurposed into recycled products such as reclaimed paint, geopolymer concrete and is even converted into energy.
Plastic Containers
Accepted at the Transfer Station and placed in a designated bin and recycled through Envirobank. No cash refunds are provided, as the facility is not a Cash for Containers depot.
Printer Cartridges
Residents can take printer cartridges to The Rediscovery Centre and dispose them for free in designed drop off bins which are sent off for recycling through various recycling schemes
Razors
Residents can take razors to The Rediscovery Centre and dispose them for free in designed drop off bins which are sent off for recycling through various recycling schemes
Recyclable Glass
Wine and spirit bottles are accepted on Saturdays, with eligible members of the Alice Springs community able to receive a 10-cent refund for up to 500 containers per driver’s license. Other eligible glass containers are accepted; however, no refund is currently provided as the facility is not a Cash for Containers depot.
Steel/Tin Cans
Accepted at the Transfer Station in a dedicated steel bin. Materials are baled and transported to Adelaide, where they are melted down and repurposed as secondary raw materials for manufacturing.
Timber
Timber can be accepted can be taken to the RWMF. Please procced to weighbridge. Fees incurred
Toothbrushes and Toothpaste Containers
Residents can take toothbrushes and empty toothpaste containers to The Rediscovery Centre and dispose them for free in designed drop off bins which are sent off for recycling through various recycling schemes
Tyres
The RWMF receives tyres over the weighbridge with fees incurred. We do not accept mining/industrial truck tyres
Whitegoods
Whitegoods can be disposed of at the Regional Waste Management Facility with fees incurred. Items that have been degassed will be charged at a lower rate than items with gas.
Residents can avoid paying a fee for dropping off their unwanted white goods at the Regional Waste Management Facility on the first Saturday of every month. Whitegoods must be empty and clean and only one item per person is free.
Wine and Spirit Bottles
Although glass wine and spirit bottles are not part of the Container Deposit Scheme in the NT, the Alice Springs Town Council offers a 10c refund for these containers.
Wine and spirit bottles can be brought to the Rediscovery Centre between 9.30am‑2.30pm on Saturdays (with a maximum of 500 wine or spirit bottles per Alice Springs resident ID) to receive a refund.
