      Caring for Dogs

      • Extra care in hot weather
      • Where can I walk my dog?
      • Firework Safety

Due to the extreme weather conditions during summer months, please ensure your pet has access to ample clean, cool drinking water and shade. Extra sources of water, such as a small wading pond, can help reduce the risk of heat stress to your pet. Ensure water bowls are situated in shaded areas and not in direct sunlight during the day. Heat stress in animals can develop very quickly, so here are a few tips on caring for your pet during hot weather:

      • DO NOT exercise your pet during the heat of the day – exercise your pet in the early morning and/or late evening.
      • Bitumen, concrete, bare ground and ute trays will burn paws in very hot temperatures. If you are unable to walk on the hot ground barefoot, chances are your dog won’t be able to either.
      • NEVER, under any circumstances, leave your pet alone in a vehicle, or on the back of a vehicle – it takes just six minutes for a dog to die in a hot car – even if the vehicle is parked in shade.
      • Top up your pet’s water bowl regularly.

Dogs over six months of age must be registered, and should be desexed. Council also recommends microchipping as the best method of identification to return lost animals to their owners. More information about registration and microchipping can be found here.

Dogs can be exercised off-leash at certain parks in Alice Springs from the hours of 5am-8am and again from 5pm-8pm. A full list of these parks can be found here. Dogs are required to be under effective control of owners at all times. This means that owners must be close enough to their dog to issue commands, and all dogs must respond to commands instantly. Any dog deemed by Rangers to be not under the control of its owner may be required to be put on-leash.

Excluding Anzac Oval and TIO Traeger Park, dogs may be exercised on Council sporting grounds between 5am and 8am. A full list of Council Sporting Facilities can be found here.

For the enjoyment of all users, please pick up after your pets. Council supplies ‘doggy do’ bags and bins at most park locations across the municipality. Please report damaged bins or empty ‘doggy do’ bag containers to Council Rangers on 8950 0500.

      Dingoes are dangerous

Dingoes are a protected species in the NT. Central Australia is home to a large population of dingoes which forms a valuable part of the regional ecosystem.

However dingoes are known to target, lure and injure domestic animals of all sizes, and can be extremely dangerous.

While Council actively minimises the threat that dingoes pose to residents and pets, these predators remain a constant presence on the town’s perimeter. During extremely hot weather, dingoes will venture further into urban areas seeking water and food. Council Rangers strongly recommend that care and vigilance is exercised when walking dogs through scrubland, even in urban areas.

Though dingoes may be more cautious around humans, it is imperative to keep your pet nearby and under effective control, preferably on-leash, in order to lower the risk of an attack. Walking dogs off-leash in scrubland may appear to be safe, however your pet can quickly become separated and vulnerable to an unseen dingo. Aside from certain parks, exercising dogs on-leash is compulsory under Alice Springs Town Council by-laws.

If you see a dingo within the municipality, please contact NTG Parks & Wildlife Rangers on 8951 8250 or 0401 115 731. To report wild or stray dogs, please call Council’s Ranger Unit on 8950 0500.

For further information on dingoes, click here.

There are many celebrations across Australia that involve firework displays, in particular in the Northern Territory. While fireworks are often enjoyed by humans, they can cause fear and dread for many dogs and other animals.

It’s important to prepare early to care for your pets when you know a fireworks display is coming up. For a full list of upcoming firework displays, you can visit NT WorkSafe here.

For tips on how to care for your dog during fireworks, visit the RSPCA website for some valuable information.

      Caring for Cats

The Alice Springs municipality is an animal restriction area under local government authority. As such, Council’s Animal Management By-laws 2008 require domestic cats to be registered and under the effective control of their owners, so as not to cause nuisance to native wildlife, neighbours, or the general public.

      • Cat registration
      • Cat safety
      • Lost, nuisance, stray or feral cats

Domestic cats over the age of six months must be registered with Council and there is a limit of two cats per household (three or more cats requires a kennel permit). Council also recommends de-sexing and micro-chipping to expedite identification and return of lost animals to owners.

More information about registering your cat with Council can be found here.

Cats are entertaining, intelligent pets and are welcome companions in many central Australian homes. Cats also are also natural hunters. Even a well-fed cat will still prey on small animals, often covering several kilometres during a night time hunting expedition.

The trend in local government authorities around the country is moving towards greater responsibility in pet ownership to prevent the decimation of Australia’s native wildlife by domestic and feral cat populations. Alice Springs Town Council encourages cat owners to keep domestic cats safely indoors, at least overnight.

There are numerous benefits to keeping your cat indoors, particularly in Alice Springs where there are greater extremes of temperature and many more native predators.

      Indoor cats are:

      • Less likely to be hit by cars or injured by another animal (reducing vet visits)
      • Less likely to fall prey to a dingo, wild dog, eagle, snake, or human predator
      • Less likely to transmit/be infected by transmissible feline diseases
      • Less like to cause disputes with neighbours
      • Less likely to hunt native wildlife, including protected species
      • Less likely to contract ticks, fleas, or worms from other animals

If not strictly indoor cats, there are ways to confine your cat to the property, including: building a cat enclosure; cat mesh; fixing deterrents along the top of fences, such as the Oscillot Cat Containment System or PVC piping; or, a Sureguard electronic system.

If your cat is missing, please first contact the Alice Springs Animal Shelter on (08) 8953 4430. If the Animal Shelter does not have your cat, contact Council’s Rangers on (08) 8950 0500. Please note, you may incur an infringement if your cat is collected, away from your property, by a Council Ranger.

If a neighbour’s cat is causing nuisance within your property, Council recommends first contacting the neighbour to advise them of their cat’s behaviour on your property. Chances are they are unaware. If the cat continues to be a nuisance, contact Council’s Rangers on (08) 8950 0500 to lodge a formal complaint.

To protect our region’s native wildlife, stray or feral cats can be caught in humane traps, available to the local community by request to Alice Springs Town Council. To enquire about hiring, and the proper, humane usage of an animal trap, please contact Council’s Rangers on (08) 8950 0500 or email astc@astc.nt.gov.au (conditions apply)

      Keeping birds

Alice Springs residents may keep domestic birds, suitably contained within their property, without a permit. Council will only become involved if your birds become a nuisance to neighbours, or a health hazard.

Domestic birds include fowl, ducks, geese, turkey, quail, pigeon and pheasant. There are also a few native bird species that do not require a permit, such as finches, budgies, galahs and lorikeets.

For a comprehensive list, click here.

To keep other native bird species, permission from NTG Parks and Wildlife is required. NTG Parks & Wildlife Rangers can be contacted on 8951 8250 or 0401 115 731.

      Keeping domestic fowl

Chickens must be contained in a secure, fenced yard or chicken-run, and not closer to a human dwelling than 1.2 metres. There is no restriction on the number of chickens allowed on a property, however possessing dozens of chickens may cause nuisance to neighbours with noise and offensive odours.

Remember, mice love bird seed! And, where’s there’s mice, they may be snakes. Council’s Rangers recommend keeping aviaries and coops clean off debris caused by seed and droppings. A clean coop has the added advantage of keeping your birds disease and parasite free.

Seed feeders are great for reducing debris and remember to secure your seed stocks in airtight containers.

Roosters can cause problems in residential areas, so please consider the following before you purchase one:

      • A rooster is not required for hens to lay eggs
      • A rooster means more chicks and can quickly lead to over-population
      • Roosters can be aggressive and may attack adults or children
      • Roosters don’t just crow at the break of dawn – they can crow at all hours of the day and night, leading to complaints to Council lodged by your neighbours
      • Probably best not to get a rooster.

Ducks and geese need and love water, so be prepared to clean their ponds at least every second day, especially in summer months. If not well maintained, a duck pond can quickly become rancid and a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Stay on the good side of your neighbours and keep your pond fresh. Ducks and geese can also be very noisy, aggressive neighbours.

      Pet Ownership

Alice Springs Town Council’s Rangers provide information and assistance on responsible pet ownership, animal registration, livestock ownership and stray pet collection.

      Pet registration

Council’s Rangers encourage residents to be responsible pet owners by being aware of responsibilities in relation to your pet, other people’s pets, neighbours and the general public.

Rangers strongly recommend owners de-sex their pets to avoid indiscriminate breeding that can result in unwanted, abandoned and neglected animals. Owners are also encouraged to microchip their pets to ensure the best method of identification for returning lost animals.

Please notify Council of any change to contact details or address so pet registration details are up to date on the Rangers’ database.

      How to register pets

All dogs and cats over the age of 6 months must be registered with Alice Springs Town Council.

Registration fees will vary, depending on whether your pet is micro-chipped and/or de-sexed. Please click below for detailed information.

      Lost pets

Domestic animals found wandering at large are taken to the Animal Shelter. While every effort is made by Council Rangers to locate owners, this process can be expedited by ensuring your pet is registered with Council, micro-chipped and your contact details are current.

Members of the public who find lost animals should call the Ranger Unit on (08) 8950 0500 to organise collection. If you wish to drop it off at the Animal Shelter yourself, please call 0490 393 825 prior to ensure there is someone onsite to meet you.

If you’ve lost your pet and want to see if it’s at the shelter you can email a photo of your lost pet to animalshelter@astc.nt.gov.au with your name and contact information. A member of our Shelter Team will then have a look and ensure that we’re keeping an eye out.

      Infringements

Infringement notices for wandering pets collected by Rangers may be issued. If your pet is impounded, a fee is required to be paid prior to release of your pet. Additional fines may be incurred if the animal is unregistered. If your pet is found to be unregistered, you will be required to pay for registration, infringement, plus impounding fee, prior to release of your pet. Maintenance fees may also be charged by the Animal Shelter.

Unclaimed animals become the property of the Alice Springs Town Council and may be disposed of, after a 48 hour period. Please ensure your pet is registered with Council.
