Alice Springs Town Council sincerely apologises to the Joint Defence Facility Pine Gap, its personnel and the wider Alice Springs community following the appearance of a Council-branded marquee at a recent protest.
Council did not provide the marquee to event organisers and was not involved in its use at the Convergence, or the Convergence itself. The marquee was a decommissioned Council asset that had been discarded but unfortunately was not disposed of appropriately. As a result, it remained in the community.
While Council did not authorise its use, we accept responsibility for the concern or offence the marquee’s appearance at the protest has caused. Its presence created an impression that Council may have been associated with the event and while this was not the case, we regret the confusion caused. Council is reviewing its processes for disposing of branded materials and equipment to help prevent a similar incident occurring again.
Alice Springs Town Council also reaffirms its position under Policy 111, which expresses Council’s support for the Joint Defence Facility Pine Gap and recognises its importance to Australia’s national security and the Alice Springs economy.
We again apologise for allowing Council’s identity to be used in a way that did not reflect Council’s involvement or its position.
