About the Art:
Australian Aboriginal culture is the oldest living on earth and Australian Aboriginal art is the largest art movement recorded in world history. The Central Arrernte people are the Traditional Custodians of Mparntwe (Alice Springs), this magnificent place where you stand in the heart of Australia we proudly call home.
Art Centres are the hub of Aboriginal communities and thriving examples of rich living culture representing the artists in every Aboriginal family. Arrernte women have collected food with their children and carried their babies for thousands of years in wooden urtnes carved from gum trees, and these urtne seats are a celebration of Mparntwe’s Aboriginal culture. Today, female Aboriginal artists create paintings and mosaics of bush tucker collected in urtne to celebrate their culture in Central Australia.
These park seats represent urtnes of bush tucker with the Central Arrernte naming represented in the mosaic. The art works were originally painted, then hand crafted into mosaics by Aboriginal artists from Tangentyere Artists, a local art centre from Mparntwe town camps. The urtne mosaics are a gift to Mparntwe’s broader community and visitors. It will be a legacy for all involved for many generations to come. Please feel welcome to invite your family and friends to enjoy a picnic in the park on the urtne seats, which also double as picnic tables.
