About the Art
Tempe Down Station. Stockmen mustering using helicopter. Shed there, where they keep all their bridles, saddles, and everything. Not so much horse riding these days. Tank stand there. Tank filled by windmill, pipes out to the dam, outside paddock. Ducks on the dam, a few horses there, a few bullocks. Through the gap in the range behind runs Illararri Creek. It comes all the way from Utju (Areyonga Community, west of Hermannsburg). There’s a waterhole called Illararri Springs just near that gap. It’s a permanent waterhole, big important place, that one. This is my mother’s Country.’
About the Artist
Daughter of Tangentyere Artists' Marjorie Williams and mother of Ingrid Williams, also of Tangentyere Artists, Williams has painted all her life. Born at Hermannsburg in 1969, Williams grew up with her parents and siblings, all active community members. She worked as receptionist for Ntaria Council and undertook training in various administrative and finance roles including payroll. She grew up dot painting with her mother and taught her children to paint.
In 2004 the Williams family all moved to Mparntwe. Williams taught Luritja at Yeperenye School, and continued as an active community member, undertaking translation work and many other cultural roles. Williams joined her mother and daughter in Tangentyere Artists' studio early in 2023. Her figurative narrative paintings about life in Mparntwe, her Country Ntaria, and her mother’s Country Tempe Downs, have all been warmly received by gallery visitors. Her creative skills grow constantly as she develops her own unique technique and style giving voice to her life stories. While drawing on the recognisable Williams family style, her paintings are particularly vibrant and filled with the joy of everyday life, easily connecting diverse audiences to the artwork.
