About the Art
Life Cycle of the Yeperenye Caterpillar is a large-scale mural inspired by the scientifically documented life cycle of the Ayepe-arenye (Yeperenye) Caterpillar. The 420m² artwork traces the caterpillar’s journey from egg, to feeding on tar-vine, through its underground pupal stage, and finally its emergence as a moth. Blue forms represent the tar-vine and the rain clouds that trigger emergence, while the black section symbolises the caterpillar's time underground as a pupa.
About the Artists
The mural was developed with significant input from local scientist Fiona Walsh, who provided research, photographs and guidance on the caterpillar's life cycle to ensure the artwork was scientifically accurate. The project brought together artistic interpretation and scientific knowledge to celebrate a species of deep cultural and environmental significance in Central Australia.
About the Project
Painted as part of the Alice Springs Street Art Festival in 2018, this iconic mural was funded by Yeperenye Shopping Centre and the Northern Territory Government. The work highlights the connection between art, science and local stories, transforming a public space into a vibrant celebration of the Yeperenye Caterpillar and its life cycle.
