Materials: Bronze, stone, water feature
About the Art:
During the creation of the sculptural installation, lead artist Julie Squires collaborated with Indigenous artists from Yuendumu, Ti Tree, Santa Teresa, Amoonguna, Papunya, Titijikala, Hermannsburg and Alice Springs. The land on which the Civic Centre stands is the locale for culturally diverse memories including Alice Springs' once main Ghantown, its first mosque, its first fire brigade and the residence of horticulturalist and anthropologist, Miss Muriel Olive Pink.
About the Inspiration:
The Gathering Garden is an environmental art installation that was inspired by the Civic Centre's rich history. It was created to pay homage to its past and present inhabitants, with emphasis on the Afghan and Indian cameleers, the early European pioneers and settlers, and the Arrernte people on whose land Alice Springs is situated.
About the Collaboration:
Created collaboratively with artists from multiple Central Australian communities, reinforcing collective authorship and shared storytelling.
