All aspects of bush medicine - the plants, the paths taken by women to collect it, and the process of preparing it for use - hold cultural and spiritual significance to Aboriginal people. Rosemary depicts the way that the women would source and pick certain types of leaves. The leaves would be dried and then mixed with animal fats to extract their medicinal oils, and then be applied topically for their healing qualities.
About the Artist
Rosemary Pitjara (Petyarre) has established herself as an accomplished bush medicine leaf painter, capturing both the movement, depth and rhythm of the leaves as they dry in the wind. Rosemary also shows an innate sense of colour in her artworks and is a much sought after artist. Rosemary was granted the permission to paint the bush medicine leaf dreaming from her cousin and acclaimed Aboriginal artist, Gloria Petyarre (deceased). Rosemary has been widely exhibited and collected.
