What is the project about?
Alice Springs Town Council is in the initial stages of the new Alice Springs Public Library, to be located on the existing civic centre southern carpark in a first-floor building as identified in the feasibility report prior to this phase. The project will explore how the library can better serve the community now and into the future.
This is the first stage of the project, Consultation and Concept Design. This stage focuses on listening, learning and developing a concept design that reflects what the community needs and values. At this phase is not about detailed design or construction.
What we’re planning?
Over the next few months, the project team will work with the community to:
- Listen to the stories that have come before our time
- Listen to how the library is currently used by the community
- Understand what works well and what doesn’t
- Understand how the new library will work with the climate in Alice Springs
- Identify the themes and values you want the future library to represent
- Develop a concept design that responds to those ideas
This work will result in a concept design, cost information and a clear pathway for future funding and detailed design.
Why does this matter?
Libraries are important civic community building in town, especially in Alice Springs, they provide many functions beyond that of a traditional library. They are places for learning, connection, rest, safety, creativity and community. This project is an opportunity to imagine a library that reflects the people who use it – our town. It is your experiences, stories and ideas that will help shape the new library that belongs to the whole community.
How can you be involved?
There will be a range of ways to take part, including:
- Community drop-in sessions
- Online surveys and suggestions boxes
- Public open days
- Youth activities and workshops
You don’t need to be an expert or prepare anything in advance. You can join a conversation, share an idea, or simply listen.
