The sandstone plinth of the sign represents the Tjoritja, or MacDonnell Ranges, believed to be created the sacred caterpillars of the Mparntwe dreamtime. The caterpillars are further referenced in the moth patterns in the folded rusted steel. The shape of the steel mimics a curl of tree bark, and the patten depicts the dense colonies in which Yeperenye Moths congregate after rain. Hyles livornicoides, or the Australian Striped Hawk Moth, is known locally as the Yeperenye Moth, and Ayepe-arenye in Arrernte language. Yeperenye is one of three caterpillar species associated with Arrernte creation stories.
