SeniorsHistorically there were very few seniors in Alice Springs with the trend seeing people leave town upon retirement. In recent years this has changed, with a healthy, active community of seniors developing. With a relaxing life style on offer the Alice Springs Town Council and the Northern Territory Government are encouraging people to stay and explore some of the vibrant activities that the town has to offer its senior citizens. Concessions are given and services provided, some of which are detailed below. As the number of people over the age of 50 increases in Alice Springs, there are now several organisations other than the Alice Springs Senior Citizens Association that cater for seniors, all with a slightly different focus. PROBUS is another such organisation with monthly meetings and/or outings for retired or semi retired people 50 years and over. The Alice Springs branch of National Seniors is concerned with the well being of seniors in society. They also conduct monthly meetings. U3A Alice Springs Inc (University of the Third Age) promotes learning for the pleasure of learning. It offers academic, cultural, recreational (including physical) groups for this purpose.
