Partnership aims to tackle graffiti

Power and Water are the first to partner with Alice Springs Town Council to tackle graffiti in Alice Springs. A $1000 reward is now available to people who provide information that leads to the conviction of graffiti criminals, when the graffiti appears on Council or Power and Water’s property.

Power and Water agreed to add to Council’s existing $500 reward, and Alice Springs Town Council encourages more public and private businesses and organisations to contribute to the reward.

“With Power and Water’s commitment to contribute $500 to our existing reward amount, it means we are offering a substantial sum of money to better encourage community members to speak out against graffiti crimes,” said Mayor Fran Kilgariff.

“Council hopes this commitment might lead to other organisations, whether they are from private or public enterprise, to participate and pledge their commitment of $500. This commitment will only be honoured when graffiti criminals are convicted of targeting the property of participating organisations,” said Mayor Fran Kilgariff.

Power and Water agreed to pledge their commitment of $500 as their property, including buildings and power boxes, are the frequent target of graffiti in Alice Springs.

“Graffiti is a senseless act, and cannot be tolerated in our community. Power and Water spend considerable time, man-hours and money each year tackling graffiti, so when the opportunity arose to join forces with Council we took it,” said Alan Whyte, Area Manager South, Power and Water.

“We would encourage others in Alice Springs to follow our lead and pledge a commitment of $500 – with a combined effort our community may just be able to take control of illegal graffiti,” said Mr Whyte.

Anyone with information about graffiti crimes is urged to call the Alice Springs Town Council on 89500500, as people who provide Council with information will receive the $1000 reward if the perpetrators are charged and convicted in a court of law.
