cycling in Alice Springs

Alice Springs Town Council is encouraging the community to “get on their bikes” and take part in the first ever National Ride to Work Day on Wednesday 17 October. From 6.30am to 9am on the day there will also be a free community breakfast to celebrate.

The free Ride to Work Day community breakfast will be held on the Civic Centre lawns on the corner of Stott Terrace and Todd Street for all participants in Australia’s biggest active workplace event.

At the breakfast there will be a live radio broadcast from ABC radio’s Stewart Brash, the host of the Breakfast Show. There will also be information on cycling safety and healthy lifestyles for people to access through the Alice Springs Cycling Club, the Baker Heart Research Institute and local bike shop displays to name a few.

“Regular and first-time riders are in Alice Springs are urged to join the first National Ride to Work Day, and make sure they use pedal power to get to work. Cycling is a healthy, efficient and cost effective way to get to work,” said Mayor Fran Kilgariff.

“By choosing to participate in Ride to Work Day, you not only get a free breakfast and some exercise, but you may be enticed to ride to work every day. You might even join a cycling group, or just have a chat about the best scenic rides in Alice Springs,” said Mayor Kilgariff.

“I urge everyone to get together with their colleagues and ride to work as a team, or meet at the event to enjoy the healthy breakfast in a social environment. Not only will increased cycling create a healthy, active and social community, it will also provide environmental benefits for the whole town,” said Mayor Kilgariff.

The event, which is a combined project of the Alice Springs Town Council and the Alice Springs Cycling Reference group members, is all about encouraging cycling in the community.

Alice Springs Town Council will also be launching the release of a new brochure “Cycling in Alice Springs – a community guide to cycling safety and sharing our roads”. The brochure highlights cycling benefits, specific Alice Springs information as well as the responsibilities of cyclists and motorists when sharing the roads.

“The Cycling in Alice Springs brochure was made possible only through the contribution and input of the Alice Springs Cycling Reference Group, the Alice Springs Cycling Club, the NT Police, the Amy Gillett Foundation and the NT Government,” said Mayor Kilgariff

“Alice Springs Town Council is proud to support the ever-growing cycling community, and is thankful to all those who have partnered with Council in bringing this event to life. Let’s hope that Ride to Work Day 2007 will be the first of many successful cycling events like this in Alice Springs,” said Mayor Kilgariff.
