Major destruction to popular sports ground

The Alice Springs Town Council is urging the community to be vigilant in reporting vandalism, following the recent destruction of the Larapinta softball oval over the weekend.

The damage appears to have been caused by a vehicle entering the facility and doing burn-outs, with large portions of grass severely torn up.

It is expected to take over six weeks to return the grass areas to their former state, and Council staff will be removing all destroyed portions, top-dressing and working hard over the coming weeks to repair the damage.

“Thankfully this recent act of vandalism will not impact on any scheduled games. So many teams utilise our sporting facilities around town, and the frequent damage caused to them impacts on all people involved,” said Mayor Kilgariff.

When acts of vandalism such as this occur, Council staff are always extremely disheartened as a lot of thought and effort goes into the ongoing maintenance and development of community owned sporting grounds and facilities.

“It saddens me to see our community owned facilities damaged, especially when our Council employees work so hard to keep them maintained to a high standard for the benefit of the entire community,” said Mayor Fran Kilgariff.

Community members are urged to call the Alice Springs Town Council on 89500500 when they see or know of vandalism occurring on Council facilities.

People who report vandalism to Council will receive a $500 reward if the perpetrators are charged and convicted.
