The Alice Springs Town Council has joined forces with the YMCA this summer in hosting Music and Mastery, a series of alcohol-free youth and family-friendly events being held over a series of Saturday nights at the Alice Springs Town Pool.
With an entry fee of only $1, the events will be held on Saturday 13, 20 and 27 January and will all run from 6.30pm to 9pm. Several local music groups and artists will be performing at the events. The barbecues will be ready for use and some free movie tickets are being given away, donated by the Chief Minister’s Office.
On 13 and 20 January DTG will be Djing and performing live hip-hop, breakbeat and rap and the Groove Kartel will entertain with sampling, acoustic and bass guitar, gospel, live rap and hip-hop singing.
“Circus Us will join DTG and the Groove Kartel at the pool on 20 January, performing juggling, acrobalance and a series of workshops. Participants will be able to make their own juggling balls and also learn how to use them,” said Mayor Fran Kilgariff.
The final event will be held on Saturday 27 January, with live music from local band FLY 990 performing a mix of songs from artists and groups ranging from Queens of the Stoneage, Nine Inch Nails, Everlast, The Foo Fighters, through to the classic sounds of Bob Marley and Joe Satriani.
“FLY 990 is a band that plays a wide variety of cover music with their very own unique edge, so I am sure the final event will be a wonderful close to Music and Mastery,” said Mayor Fran Kilgariff.
The Alice Springs Town Pool is always a popular destination for youth during summer and the school holidays, but it is a rare occasion when quality live music can be appreaciated in its grounds.
“This will bring a different edge to the normal activities kids see and participate in at the pool. We are so thrilled to be part of Music and Mastery and are sure that it will be thoroughly enjoyed by all the youth and families who come along,” said Sally Luchich, manager of the Alice Springs Town Pool.
“The Alice Springs Town Council has always had a great partnership with the YMCA in maintaining and running the Town Pool facility, and the Music and Mastery events highlight the strength and success of this ongoing community partnership,” said Mayor Kilgariff.
