The school holidays are the biggest thing on every student’s calendar, but when they come around there is often the problem of what to do during the time off. The Alice Springs Public Library is always a place of activity, but when holidays come around it comes to life and is a place brimming with fun, excitement and education for kids of all ages.
For the first time the Library will be holding improvisation workshops called ‘Play Up” in the Andy McNeill Room. Play Up involves a series of dramatic workshops designed for those aged 10-14 years and those aged 14 years and upward.
“Play Up is highly interactive and a lot of fun. People may know the popular television show Thank God You’re Here – well Play Up follows a similar theme. Participants are divided into teams, and some will function as the audience, whilst others are participating,” said Mayor Fran Kilgariff.
For those who enjoy using their creative skills, there will be various craft sessions for all ages including mobile making, felt toy making, face painting, fish fridge magnet making and learning to paint like Vincent Van Gogh, where participants can experiment with thick paint and utensils to create textured paintings.
“The Library will also be offering a kite making activity, and Bush Toys and Faerealz with Al Bathune. Children can also learn how to make plaster moulds from clay which will involve carving a mould from clay, then filling it with plaster to create a cast. This activity will be held outside in the library courtyard and children are encouraged to come warmly dressed,” said Mayor Fran Kilgariff.
There will also regular story times held throughout the school holidays, as well as a puppet show ‘A Donkey’s Tale’ by Nick Raymond which will be sure to entertain people of all ages.
"Some activities will require bookings and a minimal cost. All materials will be provided, and children are free to take their creations home with them. I encourage people to check with the Library about the activities, and full program details,” said Mayor Kilgariff.
Activities and events will be held at the Alice Springs Public Library from 26 June to 19 July. For more information on the 2007 School Holiday Program please contact the Library on 89500555.
