Alice Springs’ Harmony Day celebrations are being held on Sunday 25 March, and the entire community is invited to join in the celebrations at the Alice Springs Civic Centre Courtyard and Function Room on Todd Street from 3.30pm.
The Civic Centre will be abuzz with excitement between 3.30pm – 7pm, with people invited to come and enjoy a range of multicultural stalls and food tastings, and entertainment including multicultural dance, and various musical performances.
“We have moved the 2007 Harmony Day celebrations to the Civic Centre Courtyard and Function Room to make full use of this fabulously designed space, and fill it with community, culture and activity,” said Mayor Fran Kilgariff.
This year’s Harmony Day celebrations in Alice Springs are set to be enjoyed by people of all ages, with individual performances from Jacinta Castle, Mei Lai Swan and Drum Atweme, appearances by Yamba and Booka, as well the amazing colours and sounds from various other multicultural performances.
“Harmony Day is a time to focus on the values and beliefs that unite us as one. It is a day to celebrate all things that make Alice Springs home to a diverse and culturally rich community,” said Mayor Fran Kilgariff.
“It is also about maintaining respect for each individual, celebrating our differences, acceptance of one another and learning from those whose experiences are different from our own,” said Mayor Fran Kilgariff.
Harmony Day has become Australia’s most significant multicultural event and falls on the same day as the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. More than 300,000 Australians of all backgrounds and beliefs will celebrate Harmony Day at 5,000 events across the nation.
“I encourage everyone in the community to join in the Harmony Day festivities and build on our achievements and celebrate all that we have in Alice Springs,” said Mayor Fran Kilgariff.
