On Wednesday 25 April the Alice Springs Town Council, along with the entire nation, will solemnly offer remembrance, gratitude and pride for all Australian and New Zealand men and women who have fought and died in all wars.
“Anzac Day is a day of the highest significance for all Australians, in particular for those people who have fought for our country, and for the families and loved ones of those who have died for our country,” said Mayor Fran Kilgariff.
Council also welcomes the Royal Australian Air Force No.1 Radar Surveillance Unit (1RSU) and a contingent from the Royal Australian Navy’s HMAS ARUNTA, who will be participating in Alice Springs’ Anzac Day commemoration services.
“I was proud to welcome the No.1 Radar Surveillance Unit on Monday through an official Freedom of Entry Ceremony. It is always a pleasure to perform this ceremony, which is the highest honour a community can bestow upon a military unit, but it was even more special to do so in the lead up to Anzac Day,” said Mayor Fran Kilgariff.
The No.1 Radar Surveillance Unit manages a network of Over-The-Horizon-Radars (OTHR) to monitor the northern approaches to Australia, and is also responsible for operating a variety of other radar support equipment.
The seven member contingent from the HMAS ARUNTA, a ship with a home port in Alice Springs, is also proud to be here in the community to take part in Anzac Day commemorations.
“HMAS ARUNTA takes her name from the Arrernte people of this region. The Ship bears the Arrernte Council’s traditional colour and symbol – deep ochre and the Perentie lizard, and the Ship’s official symbol is the ‘Kadaijcha Man’. I thank them for making the effort to send member’s of the ship’s company to share in this very special national day of remembrance,” said Mayor Fran Kilgariff.
“I hope on Anzac Day that everyone in the community will take the time to remember the many Australians who have fought and died in all wars for our country,” said Mayor Fran Kilgariff.
