On the evening of Wednesday 28 February a series of highly inappropriate racial slurs were spray painted on the road, footpaths and outside walls of private businesses on Elders Street, and the Alice Springs Town Council is urgently seeking information from the public regarding the crime.
Members of the community are urged to call the Alice Springs Town Council on 89500500, as people who provide Council with information will receive a $500 reward if the perpetrators are charged and convicted in a court of law.
“Unlawful graffiti is always unacceptable, however the content used in this incident cannot and will not be tolerated. We ask anyone with information about the crime to please report it immediately,” said Mayor Fran Kilgariff.
“Regardless of an individual’s or group’s experience, there is no justification or excuse for the words that were sprayed across the roads and buildings on this occasion,” said Mayor Kilgariff.
“What saddens and angers me the most is that people who think this type of action is warranted, don’t stop to think of the negative and far reaching effects this type of behaviour has on our whole community,” said Mayor Fran Kilgariff.
“One careless and mindless act such as this, can contribute to people feeling unsafe and insecure across our entire community,” said Mayor Fran Kilgariff.
The Alice Springs Town Council and the private businesses affected have worked hard today to remove the graffiti.
Council has reported the incident to the Police, and ongoing investigation will be occurring however any further information regarding the crime, whether large or small, would be greatly appreciated.
