Australia Day a proud moment for Territorians

Alice Springs Town Council encourages the community to show their support for the Territorians who will pledge or affirm their citizenship at a special ceremony in Alice Springs on Friday 26 January

Mayor Fran Kilgariff will conduct the Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony, to be held at the Civic Centre Functions Room on Todd Street, starting at 8am with an honour guard and flag raising ceremony.

“This year we have a change of venue to the Civic Centre. In previous years we have had the ceremony at the Old Telegraph Station, but with the redevelopment of the Civic Centre last year, the Functions Room, looking out to the courtyard, will be a beautiful setting,” said Mayor Fran Kilgariff.

After the Citizenship Ceremony awards will be presented for Centralian of the Year, Young Centralian of the Year, Student Citizen of the Year and Event of the Year.

“Those whose birthday falls on Australia Day, known as the ‘26er’s’, will be called up for the cutting of the cake,” said Mayor Kilgariff.

Mayor Fran Kilgariff calls on the people of Alice Springs to use Australia Day as a time to come together and demonstrate unity and a sense of national spirit by participating in the Australia Day ceremony.

“I am always honoured to be given the opportunity to welcome new citizens, and offer best wishes for a happy and successful future as citizens of Australia, and as residents of the Northern Territory,” said Mayor Kilgariff.

“In Alice Springs we are proud Australians, and Territorians, and our rich and diverse culture and heritage is something for everyone to be proud of – I take great pride in wishing everyone a happy Australia Day,” said Mayor Kilgariff.
