Council is calling for Expressions of Interest for the public art component of the new Aquatic Centre.

EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST

AQUATIC CENTRE - PUBLIC ART WORK

Alice Springs Town Council is calling for Expressions of Interest from suitably qualified artist to provide their artistic vision for the public art component of the new Alice Springs Aquatic Centre.

The successful artist will join the project team for approximately 5 weeks during June and July 2008 to provide a wholistic artistic vision that will integrate a range of art mediums by a variety of artists and community groups for multiple sites at the aquatic centre.

The artist will be asked to provide Council with a vision based feasibility study and masterplan for a concept design that incorporates 2 and 3 dimensional installations including functional pieces.

This vision has the opportunity of encompassing interior and exterior spaces and is open for artistic interpretation. It is expected that the artist will incorporate outcomes from community consultation processes, engaged by the Public Art Advisory Committee in May.

The Expressions of Interest are due in on Monday 19 May and will be assessed by the Public Art Advisory Committee. The successful applicant will be notified late May.

1.0 THE PUBLIC ART ADVISORY COMMITTEE

The Public Art Advisory Committee comprises two Aldermen, Directors from Technical Services and Corporate and Community Services, the Community Cultural Development Officer and local community representation from an Architect, a Community Cultural Development Officer, a Native Title Holder, an Art Organisation representative and an Arts N.T. Regional Officer.

2.0 STAGE 1 - EXPRESSION OF INTEREST SUBMISSIONS

Submissions must include the following materials:
A brief written outline of the artist's concept, site strategy and consultation methodology;
Examples of consultations and research methodologies conducted previously, no more than two;
Current curriculum vitae, no more than three (3) pages;
Examples of previous work in an electronic format such as CD/DVD, no more than ten (10) minutes long;
Inclusion of photos or slides, of no more than ten (10) examples of previous works;
Names and contact details of two referees

3.0 APPLICANT/S SELECTION CRITERIA.

Applicants will be evaluated against the following selection criteria:
Relevant experience and success in delivering similar public projects;
Ability to work with cultural histories and different notions of sense of place and identity;
Ability to develop artistic concepts based on community consultation;
Ability to meet project timelines;
Knowledge of health and safety issues in design and construction of art works for public spaces;
Ability to ensure the public art work meets safety requirements and is structurally sound;
Proven experience in working across a range of disciplines with the ability to incorporate these into a wholistic aesthetic and practical vision;
Proven research skills;
Proven ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team, i.e. architects, project manager, technicians and a Committee;
Be a local artist;
Have strong networking capabilities with wide ranging scope for multidisciplinary arts praxis.

4.0 THE ARTIST RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful applicant will be responsible for:
Liaising with the ASTC technical services team and the Public Art Advisory Committee on all aspects of the project;
Attending Public Art Advisory Committee meetings;
In partnership with PAAC conduct, artist led workshop/s with local community groups and key stake holders;
Working to a budget;
Providing documentation and a final report.

5.0 CONTRACTUAL ARRANGEMENTS

The successful artist will be engaged by Alice Springs Town Council and the payment schedule will be $5,000. This will be paid as follows:
40% will be paid upon commissioning of the artist;
30% will be paid upon completion of the feasibility study and masterplan;
30% will be paid upon acceptance of the work by Council and the completion of the reporting requirements to Council.

6.0 SUBMITTING AN EXPRESSION OF INTEREST

Expressions of Interest should be forwarded, in hard copy by 5pm Monday, 19 May, 2008.
