Youth Writes


For people aged 15 to 25.

A chance for you to speak you mind and develop your creative voice through artistic expressions like spoken word, hip hop, poetry, and creative writing.

Fortnightly on a Wednesday from 4.30pm to 6.30pm at The Hall (located between Post Office and Flynn Memorial Uniting Church). Next session June 13.

The Alice Springs Public Library has a range of resources for children and youth, including:

We run regular FREE programs for children aimed at developing literacy, promoting reading and use of the library resources, contributing to community devlopment and the sharing of culture and knowledge.

Regular Programs

 

Baby Rhyme Time

Friday mornings from 10.15am-10.45am

For 0-2 year olds. Songs, rhymes, stories and play are a wonderful way to develop a love of language. This interactive session is designed to support pre-literacy education in a fun and social way.

FREE. No bookings required. 0-2 year olds.

 

Preschool Storytime

Monday afternoons from 2.00pm-2.30pm, and Tuesday mornings from 10.15am-10.45am

For 2-5 year olds. Learning can be as simple as one book. Preschool Storytime is a fun and interactive session using books, rhymes, songs and play to stimulate literacy development.

FREE. Bookings not required. 2-5 year olds.

 

LEGO Club

Monday afternoons from 3.00pm-4.30pm

The Alice Springs Public Library has its very own LEGO Club and you're invited to join in! All ages welcome.

LEGO is supplied (although donations are always appreciated). All you need is a willingness to have fun and create! Create something yourself, in a team or try out our Challenge Cards. There is something for everyone at the LEGO Club.

FREE. No bookings required during School Term time. 

Code Club

Tuesday afternoons from 3.30pm-5.00pm during term time.

Code Club is a free after school program for boys and girls aged 8-12 years and teaches children the skills, confidence and opportunity to shape their world using coding, robotics and game-design. In Term 2 Code Club runs for 9 weeks. Children will learn to code with a new language, HTML/CSS. This is the first language students will learn to code with in text. Begin the stepping stones to building your very own website with HTML/CSS.

Bookings are essential and places are limited. We ask for a commitment from participants to attend all 9 sessions. Term 2 runs from 1 May - 26 June 2018.

Young Writers' Club

This program is designed for budding young writers and story tellers with a new theme chosen each term to explore different ways to write and tell stories.
FREE. No bookings required. For 7-12 year olds. Wednesday afternoons from 3.30pm-5.00pm during school term.

In Term 2 2018, Young Writers’ Club will have a break, to return in Term 3, late July/early August 2018.

STEAM Corps

Thursday afternoons from 3.30pm-5.00pm during term time.

Discover the library’s robotics collection and skill yourself up for the future at our new weekly STEAM Corps program for boys and girls ages 8 to 14. This term in STEAM Corps we will be working with and programming the LEGO EV3 MINDSTORMS.

Bookings are essential and places are limited. We ask for a commitment from participants to attend all 9 sessions. Term 2 runs from 3 May - 28 June 2018

Community Events and Organisations

In addition to the programs run within the library, we also visit other organisations such as:

  • Local schools - contact us if you would like to bring your class for a visit!
  • Territory Parents Support Group at the Flynn Drive Community Health Centre
  • Yipirinya School Storytime

We also take part in community events such as:

  • Children’s Week Celebrations
  • Alice Desert Festival events
  • Bangtail Muster and School Fetes with Booka the dog, the Library’s mascot

 

Youth Computers

In our Youth area, we have a range of PCs and Macs for use by 12-17 year olds. These provide access to filtered internet, online resources and music software.

Youth can access these computers for FREE from 3pm on school days and all day on weekends and school holidays. 

Special access during school hours will only be granted if a parent or guardian is present.
