In May 2014 the Alice Springs Central Deserts Branch of the Ulysses Club, will be host to the Clubs National AGM to be held in Alice Springs.
Each year, club members from all around Australia, as well as some from overseas, travel to the designated location for the AGM (Annual General Meeting), an event that has grown from a camp over, meeting and meal of the early days, to a major event spanning over a week.
Involvement by the major motorcycle manufacturers and suppliers by putting on trade displays and test rides of the latest machinery, a Grand Parade through the town or city, several nights of various entertainment, Friday and Saturday night social events, a church service and of course the official meetings and ceremonies.
Why do we have an AGM?
Every year the Ulysses Club Inc. holds its Annual General Meeting to vote on who will be elected to serve on our National Committee.
It takes the form of a closed rally or odyssey and is a celebration of the ideals and aims of the Club
What are the aims of the Club?
The Club constitution gives three basic and simple aims:
• To provide ways in which older motorcyclists can get together for companionship and mutual support;
• To show, by example, that motorcycling can be an enjoyable and practical activity for riders of all ages;
• To draw the attention of public and private institutions to the needs and views of older riders.
These three basic aims underpin the Club’s popularity by providing common ground to like-minded motorcyclists everywhere.
Where do the Members come from?
We have members from all walks of life, from politicians to pensioners – a common bond of enjoying their motorcycling well into their twilight years, unites us all.
The success of the Ulysses Club Inc. in Australia is hard to hide and to date we have over 135 branches scattered throughout the land as well as Clubs in New Zealand, Norway, Vietnam, Canada, UK, Germany and South Africa. Discussions have commenced to start Clubs in various other parts of Europe and in North America.
What is the benefit to Alice Springs?
Most Members use it as an excuse to have a holiday in the area it is being hosted.
The Club caters well for the resurgence of older riders around the world. The advent of the “baby boomers” coming into their fifties is well known. These members have probably paid off the mortgage, raised the kids and maybe now have a little more disposable time and income to invest in their motorcycling lifestyle.
Many millions of dollars are left behind in the host areas, as generally, Ulyssians are a free spending lot. The local business and traders will benefit very well, the publicity for the town and surrounding area will benefit for years to come, well after the AGM Event has long finished, also the locals benefit from the meeting of new people, checking out all the different bikes around and any side entertainment that is organized outside of the Event site grounds, due to the fact that the AGM is being hosted in Alice Springs.
Just like King Ulysses long ago, they venture out and revel in the excitement and pleasure that riding with like-minded fellow Ulyssians brings.
