Rotary Bangtail Muster Parade

The Rotary Bangtail Muster has been part of the community of Alice Springs since 1959. It is a fun filled parade that celebrates what makes Central Australia different. This years theme: Linking Communities celebrates our diversity and where we've come from.

The first Bangtail Muster was run by the Chamber of Commerce in 1959.

The Parade was so successful that it became an annual event and the newly formed Alice Springs Rotary Club took over the project in 1961 and have been running it ever since.

The Alice Springs Rotary Club meets at Madigans Restaurant at the Desert Park each Wednesday at 7.00pm - call 0437427015 for details if you would like to attend.

The parade provides an ideal opportunity to promote different themes that bring the community together in a fun and family friendly atmosphere.

Some previous themes - 2001 - Centenary of Federation; 2004 - Sport; 2005 - Water; 2006 - Aussie Heroes; 2007 - Healthy Living; 2009 - Alice Solar City.

What is a Bang Tail?

They are the hairy end of cattle tails which after muster were cut from each animal with a sharp knife and then counted to tally up the total muster. The hairs grow from the top and take about 3 years to grow so cattlemen could tell which animals had been previously mustered.

The early parades were named in honour of the cattlement and it's stuck!
