In the 2006 Census (held on 8th August 2006), there were 23,892 persons usually resident in the local government area of Alice Springs (town): 49.4% were males and 50.6% were females.

The Northern Territory has by far the biggest proportion of Indigenous residents of any Australian state or territory, but the overall population figure across Australia is low.

Of the total population in the Northern Territory 18.8% were Indigenous persons, compared with 2.3% Indigenous persons Australia-wide.

Alice Springs' altitude is AHD 575 meters above sea level. The highest point in the Northern Territory is Mount Zeil at 1,531 metres, which is in the West MacDonnell Ranges about 150km west north west of Alice Springs.

Alice Springs Town has an area of 149 square kilometres (as of 1979 - there have been six boundary changes since 1888)

The Municipality of Alice Springs has an area of 327 square km, and includes the Alice Springs Airport.
