Desert Song Festival 2018
Over 10 days in September, singers and musicians, choirs and audiences from Alice Springs and Central Australia and visitors to the region experience something special, as artists from this vibrant multi-cultural community come together to present a series of events that showcase incredible local musical talent.
Through major concerts, chamber concerts, workshops and masterclasses, the choirs, small vocal ensembles, musicians and solo performers, come together to present a number of events celebrating the singer, the song, the instrument, the land and its people.
After five successful annual festivals, the Desert Song Festival will mount its most ambitious program in 2018. Its theme will be: “What a Wonderful World! – celebrating global heritage.” A bold artistic innovation will bring together musical traditions from India, Africa, the Americas and Central Australia, to celebrate our shared global musical heritage. The Festival will be bookended by two major events staged in Tjoritja – the West MacDonnell Ranges- to celebrate connection to country. And, for the first time FILM will be added to the program with screenings of the celebrated documentary ‘The Song Keepers’ the extraordinary story of the Central Australian Aboriginal Women’s Choir.
Offering a unique opportunity to connect with the perpetual custodians of this land; with the majestic Ranges and Gorges of Central Australia as its backdrop and heritage venues within the built environment of Alice Springs as its stages, this festival will present the visitor with a compelling reason to ‘do the NT’, by visiting ‘a town like Alice’ to attend the Desert Song Festival.
