Alice Springs Town Council is once again celebrating Ride to Work day on Wednesday 14th October 2009 with a community breakfast to be held on the Council lawns from 6:30am.
The annual event aims to encourage Australian workers to adopt a healthier and environmentally sound way of getting to work, saving their budget thousands of dollars each year. Ride to Work Day spokesman Julian Barry said the program assists those wanting to try riding to work as an alternative mode of transport. “It’s the only national day, where first-timers and regular bike riders can celebrate the act of riding to work together,” Mr Barry said.
The festivities kick off on the Council lawns from 6:30am to 9am and by getting involved in the morning you could win some great prizes. There will be fancy dress competitions for ‘the best-dressed cyclist’ and ‘the best-dressed bike’. Plus heaps of other giveaways thought out the morning. Don’t miss the FREE breakfast of fruit, muffins and juice plus Alderman Brendan Heenan will be cooking his famous pancakes!
There will be stalls displaying all the equipment necessary for safe bike riding and Baker IDI will be offering health checks including cholesterol, blood pressure, blood glucose and Body Mass Index assessments.
To add to the atmosphere, Stewart Brash from ABC will be broadcasting live from the Council lawns during the breakfast.
Now in its third year on the national calendar, the annual event not only gets people thinking about bike riding, but encourages them to have a go and experience the
multiple benefits. Rider registration is free and encouraged, go to www.Ride2Work.com.au
This year over 140,000 participants across Australia are expected to ride to work on 14 October, a significant increase on last year’s 110,000 riders. Workplaces across
the country embrace the day with 4,000 workplaces expected to register for the day compared to 3710 workplaces last year.
