community oral history

During Heritage Week, the Alice Springs Public Library will provide a two (2) day workshop entitled the Oral History Project.

Oral History Workshop

29 April and 1 May 2008, 8.30am - 4.15pm

This free two day workshop will provide attendees with an opportunity to learn practical and theoretical information about oral history; what it is and why it is important. The Oral History program aims to be as interactive and practical as possible.

Participants are required to attend both days of the program and to bring a project they are currently working on or are about to start – to gain the most benefit. There will also be follow up sessions in May and June 2008.

Day One:
The first day of the program will discuss ethics and Oral History Association of Australia guidelines; methods and standards; copyright; ownership; and stakeholders.

Day Two:
The second day of the program will enable participants to practice their new skills and use the equipment available at Alice Springs Library for future community Oral History projects. The exercises demonstrated and practiced on the day will focus on recording techniques and use of the recording equipment at Council and Northern Territory Archive Service, and developing skills in interviewing, from planning to delivery.

The program is part of Heritage Week and will be run on Tuesday 29 April and Thursday 1 May. Sessions will be held in the Andy McNeill room, beginning at 8.30 am and finishing at 4.15pm. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided for morning and afternoon tea, please bring your own lunch.

Please note: There is only room for 10 participants. In order for us to provide as practical and effective assistance to as wide a range of organisations, groups and individuals as possible, we ask that only one representative from an organisation or group attend.
