sporting facilities in Alice Springs

Alice Springs Town Council provides and maintains various sporting ovals and facilities within the community.

Commitment to encouraging physical activity, coupled with financial support from the NT Government, has enabled the Council to develop facilities for almost every sport.

Council is committed to maintaining and developing these facilities to the highest standard, which is a testament to how much sport and recreation is an integral part of Council’s strategic planning.

Alice Springs Town Council’s goal is to ensure that adequate sporting ovals and facilities are developed, operated and maintained so residents, individuals and community groups have access to quality venues for sporting and recreation activities.

the Good Sports program

Alcohol and sport are historically closely linked in Australia. Evidence is growing which demonstrates that community-based sports clubs contribute to alcohol problems by accepting and promoting excessive drinking and providing inappropriate role models for young people.

The Good Sports program is a national initiative of the Australian Drug Foundation (ADF) to develop safer and healthier communities. It is a free program which helps clubs change their culture to become more focused on young people and families and less on the consumption of alcohol at high risk levels. Good Sports works to create sustainable change by enabling sporting clubs to change their systems and practices around the responsible serving of alcohol.

The key strategy of Good Sports is the accreditation program. The three level accreditation criteria consist of a set of alcohol management standards for clubs that serve and consume alcohol. Clubs are required to move through the levels in a set amount of time (maximum 5 years), maintaining all the criteria from previous levels as they do so. A Good Sports Project Officer assists the club through the entire process.

Ross Park Redevelopment

The future has never looked brighter for soccer in Alice Springs. The round-ball game is booming and Football Federation Northern Territory (Southern Zone) recently secured an NT Government grant of $500,000 for the development of facilities for junior soccer in Alice Springs.

Football Federation NT, Alice Springs Town Council and the Northern Territory Government will work together to plan the development of the grounds which will include installing lighting on the main oval and building a new club room facility.

The proposed lighting design allowed for nil upward component of light and would also feature modern light fittings with a sharp cut off and very limited spill lighting. The specifics of the building are yet to be finalised but will be likely to include a meeting room and office.

In response to Eastside residents feedback regarding congestion and parking issues, Council will provide the funding to seal and line mark the existing car park area to prevent dust and increase parking availability. This should also help with traffic control and safety of participants during busy times.
