"Those who teach shall also learn and those who learn shall also teach
"
U3A is an international organisation which promotes learning for people in their 'third age' (over 50 years of age) – the stage of life after full-time paid work.
U3A offers no degrees or diplomas, and has no entry requirements except a desire to learn.
The U3A course presenters are people who have practised a profession, craft, trade, lived overseas or travelled and are keen to share their knowledge and experiences with you. Learning in this University is purely for pleasure.
All U3A members participate, either by teaching, learning or assisting with planning and administration. This self-help approach reduces the need for dependence on outside resources.
The U3A movement began in Toulouse, France, in 1973 to improve the quality of life for older people. The courses were prepared and offered by the University.
The concept was introduced to Britain in the 1980's by Cambridge University. Unlike the French model a self help idea was created; a kind of intellectual democracy in which those with knowledge are encouraged to share in an environment of equality and generosity.
U3A came to Australia in 1985 and to Alice Springs in 2005. It has spread rapidly through most Australian cities and regional centres.

Hello everyone,
I am in a bit of a reflective mood at the moment and was looking at our logo, which shows in the heading of this Newsletter.
Barbara Gilfedder described the meaning of the logo as follows:
The star represents our hopes and dreams whilst the concentric circles are a Central Australian Aboriginal motif representing a meeting place where we can refresh ourselves with social interaction and new learning.'
The more I think about it, the more it appeals to me, because that is exactly what U3A is. I don't think there is anyone in U3A who can say that they knew all the members before this movement started.
With this Newsletter comes the Membership Application Form for 2008. Would you please complete this, especially the section on your interests and what skills or knowledge you would be prepared to share with other members. The more information, the easier it will be to organise events for you. Renewal of your membership will ensure that you will be able vote and stand for election at the next AGM.
Membership fee for 2008 is $25.00 per person and $40.00 for a couple living at the same address. The form with the money may be left at Loraine Braham’s office or sent in by mail to: U3A, P.O. Box 4661, ALICE SPRINGS 0871 (and Kathy and I will be happy to receive your contributions)
New members enrolling before the end of the year, can take advantage of the courses available now.
The continuation of courses during the Christmas period will be decided by the individual presenters. Naturally swimming will continue. Please check with your presenter to be sure.
We are all volunteers, so presenters would like to be informed if, for whatever reason, you are not attending for an activity you have been enrolled in.
I hope to see you at our End of Year get together. If not, best wishes for the Christmas period and a very happy and satisfying New Year.
Gerda.

As this is the last Newsletter for 2007 we thought a few reminders to add to your busy schedules.
Film Club. Meet weekly/fortnightly/monthly depending upon decision of participants, to watch a movie and then discuss it afterwards over coffee.
Participants would decide on the movie, and the date and time that best suits all. They could visit the movie theatre in the Mall, or screenings at Araluen.
Movie lists will be made available.
U3A will approach the theatres to see what discounts are available for our members.
Contact: Lee Lord, Ph 8953 2707 with your name and contact details.
If enough people are interested we aim to start this group after Christmas.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
A group of our members have decided that they would like to study history. Are there more of our members who would like to be involved? If so, ring Lee Lord ( 8953 2707) who has taken on to organise the first get together to discuss the possibilities of such a group.
It would be good to see this come to fruition and could also show the way for more study groups.
Notice to all course leaders…
Over the next couple of weeks I will be contacting you for the details of your course/s held during the year.
As I will be away on holidays for a couple of months after Christmas I would like to finalise everything before I go (especially my preparation for the AGM upon my return)
