Community Computer and Equipment Program

Alice Springs Town Council has a program where surplus or superceded computing equipment is donated to community organisations.

The purpose of this program is to:

  • provide support to community organisations.
  • extend the working life of Council purchased computer equipment, reducing landfill.

The Computer program is dependant on availability of equipment, on average it runs twice a year.

Types of Equipment

The equipment will vary in specifications but all allocations will typically include:

  • A desktop computer with processor, hard drive, memory, CD-ROM, floppy drive
  • Monitor, keyboard, mouse and their cables
  • Power cables for monitor and computer
  • Operating system that was originally licensed with the computer (which will need to be re-installed)

The successful applicant is responsible for the collection and installation of the equipment and any associated costs.

There is no ongoing warranty, support or maintenance of the equipment by ASTC.

The equipment is donated on an 'as is' basis and may require additional expenditure by the recipient to configure to individual requirements.

The equipment must be retained for a minimum period of 6 months from the date of receipt and used for the purpose stated in the application which must be consistent with the applicant's core community activities.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria

Applications are assessed by a selection committee consisting of Aldermen and Council Officers.

To be eligible your organisation must be:

  • based in Alice Springs
  • established and operating at the date of the application
  • a not for profit organisation
  • engaged in community projects or activities
  • able to use, support and maintain the computer

Computers will not be granted to individuals, commercial or business enterprises or to Government agencies.

Priority will be given to applicants who

  • have not previously received equipment through this program
  • whose program would greatly benefit from the equipment
  • currently have limited or no capacity to self-fund the purchase of such equipment

The selection committee will attempt to achieve a broad distribution across the community sector in Alice Springs.

Successful applicants will have met the selection criteria, based on information received in their application which addressed the:

  • intended use of the equipment
  • likely impact on the target community group/s
  • benefits and outcomes expected
  • impact on organisational efficiency
