Gardening in Alice Springs
Hi,
My partner and I are looking at moving to Alice Springs in 2009 (from Melbourne) ... I have been looking on the internet for news about any community gardens in the area but haven't had much luck. Do people grow their own fruit and vegies? (If yes, what do they usually grow?)
Thanks,

Gardening in Alice Springs
There are no community gardens in Alice Springs that I am aware of.
Yes, people certainly grow their own fruit and vegetables here. Most things grow well in a desert climate given enough water. We do have frosts in winter, which limits the use of some plants.
Summers can be very stressful on gardens and many people choose not to attempt vegetable gardening during summer. Others have some success using shaded garden beds.
Indigenous plants are the best bet for a hardy drought-resistant garden.Non-indigenous food plants known to do very well in Alice Springs include citrus, mulberry, grapes, pomegranate, okra, chillies, dates.
