Alice Springs Town Council is taking a proactive approach to environmental issues and recycling. Council introduced a Cash for Containers scheme, where residents can cash in their empty drinking containers (aluminium and glass) for 5 cents per container. The dual advantage of this exciting new initiative is the potential significant reduction in the town’s litter plus the many environmental benefits.

Alice Springs Town Council officially open the glass crushing facility in June 2010.  Glass collected from the Cash for Containers scheme is crushed and used in non load bearing cements such as footpaths.

Council’s Cash for Containers deposit centre is located at the Council depot on Wilkinson Street.  The collection times are - Saturday 9am to 1pm and Tuesday 7:30am to 12pm (closed on public holidays).

Cash for Containers points to remember:

  • Available to residents of Alice Springs Municipality only. Drivers licence required to confirm ratepayers address.
  • Maximum 500 containers per person in attendance per day (glass or aluminium must be sorted seperately).
  • 5 cent payment per container, paid onsite.
  • Aluminium and glass drink containers only.
  • Cans accepted crushed or whole.

Waste Management

Landfill: The Council’s Landfill in Commonage Road provides a range of services including organic (greenwaste) recycling, best practice fill and compaction techniques, data collection capabilities.

Disposal of Chemicals: Unwanted household products such as paint, cleaners and pesticides must not be placed in your regular waste or recycling bins.

Kerbside Collection: Alice Springs Town Council, in conjunction with the kerbside collection contractor, provides a domestic waste collection service in the Alice Springs community.

Pension Prunings Pickup Service: The Council runs a twice-yearly, free, collection service for garden waste for senior residents of Alice Springs.

Recycling: The waste and recycling directory provides information on recycling for the Municipality of Alice Springs. Using any of these services will reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.
